New Delhi, October 30 The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has recommended that the Manipur government immediately remove the “arbitrary restrictions” on Irom Sharmila, who has been quick since Nov 2000 seeking repeal of the soldiers (Special Powers) Act from the state, an official statement said Wednesday.
The commission, in a communication to the state cabinet minister, said Sharmila should be permitted to receive visitors as do all people in judicial custody.
Sharmila was in remission by the Manipur government soon after she began her quick and has ever since been in custody.
“It is unlikely that the govt gives others access to her.
They were keeping her alive as her death would produce issues for the state government. it’s trying to interrupt her spirit through this enforced isolation, that there’s no judicial mandate, although she is in judicial custody.
