Pakistani onions bring down prices in Kashmir

wholesale_onionsSrinagar, October 26 Onion costs started decreasing here Saturday due to its arrival from Pakistan.

Onions were selling at Rs.100 per kilogram here until Friday, however recorded a decline in costs Saturday with retail traders selling it@ 75 per kg.

The wholesale traders of onion are attributing the fall in costs to the arrivals from Pakistan.

Onions have coming here through Line of Control trade from Chakan da Bagh and also from Punjab once their import from Pakistan.

we sold Pakistani onions at Rs.55-60 per kilogram in the wholesale market these days (Saturday) morning.
“This has brought down the wholesale value of onions in Srinagar and alternative parts of the valley.
“Retailers are currently selling a similar at Rs.70-75 per kilogram in the markets,said a wholesale vegetable dealer here.

Another wholesale dealer Muzaffar Ahmad, 48, said the onions from Nasik, Maharashtra, are the most sought after here as these are of a better quality.
“Onion costs can begin coming down after Diwali as yield from other parts of the country would start reaching the markets.” a wholesale vegetable dealer said.

“Now that the costs have started coming down, the tendency of bulk buying also will be checked,” he added.
