Floods leave 32 dead in South Africa

FLOODDJohannesburg, March 18: Floods caused by heavy rains that affected most parts of South Africa left 32 dead and about 3, 000 displaced, authorities aforesaid Monday.

“Regrettably, the current disaster events have resulted in thirty two fatalities. These embrace 25 drownings. Six fatalities were conjointly caused by lightning and one person died due to a folded wall,” Xinhua quoted Andries Nel, deputy minister of Cooperative Governance and ancient Affairs, as saying.

“At now, provincial reports indicate that 3,000 people are still displaced within the Lephalale native Municipality (Limpopo district) due to the high water levels,” Nel said.

He aforesaid water has subsided in other parts of the country with people returning to their homes that had been lined in water.

He added the govt. is trying to assist those suffering from the floods. “A range of people are saved from the roofs of their vehicles and several were trapped in their homes. Rescue efforts continue within the explore for these missing people,” he said, adding the govt. remains probing for those reported  missing.

“There has been sizeable injury to roads and bridges, houses, and water pumps, pipes and alternative water infrastructure. In some areas communities are unable to access workplaces, health services, shelter and faculties.” the govt. couldn’t offer the price of injury caused by the rain because the assessment remains underway.

The government suggested South Africans to follow the weather forecasts and be vigilant whereas driving.

“On Monday and Tuesday underway expect floods in Mpumalanga and low lying areas of river provinces. we’ll still have isolated showers on Thursday and in future however not like the one we had,” aforesaid Johan Vermeulen, the weather forecaster from the South African Weather Service.
