Salt can kill cancer cells: Study

SALTLondon, Aug 14: Subsequent weapon to effectively fight cancer can be salt as researchers have found that an inflow of salt into a cell triggers its death.

The finding may lead to new anti-cancer medicine, aforesaid the researchers who created a molecule that may cause cancer cells to self-destroy by carrying Na and chloride ions into the cells.

“This work shows however chloride transporters will work with Na channels in cell membranes to cause an flow of salt into a cell,” aforesaid study author academic Philip wind from the University of Southampton in United Kingdom.

“We found we can trigger cell death with salt,” wind additional.

Cells within the physical body exerting to maintain a stable concentration of ions within their cell membranes.

Disruption of this delicate balance will trigger cells to travel through apoptosis, called programmed cell death, a mechanism the body uses to free itself of broken or dangerous cells.

Unfortunately, once a cell becomes cancerous, it changes the method it transports ions across its cell wall in a method that blocks programmed cell death.

The new artificial particle transporter works by primarily encompassing the chloride particle in an organic blanket, permitting the particle to dissolve within the cell’s membrane, that consists mostly of lipids, or fats.

The researchers found that the chloride transporter tends to use the sodium channels that naturally occur within the cell’s membrane, delivery sodium ions on for the ride.

“We have shown that this mechanism of chloride flow into the cell by an artificial transporter will so trigger programmed cell death,” aforesaid author of the study Jonathan Sessler from the University of Texas at Austin.

The study appeared within the journal Nature Chemistry.
