Modi a threat to democracy, say Indian-origin academics

MODI-7London, April 24: A group of Indian-origin teachers in Britain has slammed the BJP’s prime ministerial willdidate Narendra Modi for his authoritarian nature which they aforesaid can solely weaken India’s democracy.

Around seventy five teachers from universities across Britain, led by Chetan Bhatt of the London college of economic science, Tuesday expressed their collective concern over the approaching government in India, through a letter, titled ‘The plan of Modi in power fills US with dread’ to The freelance newspaper in Britain.

Among others within the cluster are Oxford University’s Nandini Gooptu and Cambridge University’s Joya Chatterji.

“We are deeply involved at the implications of a Narendra Modi-led BJP government for democracy, doctrine and human rights in India,” the cluster aforesaid within the letter.

Commenting on the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party’s agenda of development for the 2014 general elections, it aforesaid that “the Modi-BJP model of economic process involves shut linking of state with business, generous transfer of public resources to the rich and powerful, and measures harmful to the poor”.

The letter aforesaid the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate has been embedded within the Hindu nationalist movement, particularly the RSS and alternative Sangh Parivar teams, with their history of inciting violence against minorities.

Referring to Modi’s alleged role within the 2002 Godhra riots in Gujarat, the teachers said: “This violence occurred beneath Modi’s rule, and senior government and police officers have provided testimony of his alleged role in encouraging or allowing it to occur.”

“He has ne’er apologised for hate speech or disdainful comments regarding varied teams – together with Muslims, Christians, ladies and Dalits. His nighest aide has been censured recently by India’s election commission for hate speech employed in this election campaign,” it added.

The cluster contended that a Modi-led BJP government would result in larger ethical policing, particularly of ladies, increased  censorship and law enforcement, and a lot of tensions with India’s neighbours.

The rest of the teachers are a part of alternative leading British academic, including the University of Warwick, the University of Portsmouth, the London Metropolitan University, the varsity of Oriental and African Studies and University college London, the University of Göttingen, the University of Manchester, the University of Central Lancashire, the University of London, the University of Wolverhampton, the University of Edinburgh, the University of East London, Oxford Brookes University, the University of the humanities London, the University of Edinburgh, the University of Leeds, King’s college London, the University of the Witwatersrand, Stellenbosch University, the University of Westminster, the Glasgow Caledonian University, the University of Birmingham, and Durham University.
