WTC Final: Australia will be talking about Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara, says Ricky Ponting

By India Today Sports Desk: Ricky Ponting has said that Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara will be key players for India in the World Test Championship Final at The Oval and the Australian team will be talking about them ahead of the match.

Pujara has been a thorn in the side of the Aussies as he has scored more runs and centuries against them than any other side. In the 24 Tests he has played against them, the 35-year-old has scored 2033 runs and five centuries.

Kohli has also had a very successful record against Australia in the longest format of the game, as he has scored 1979 runs in 24 matches against them and got his highest score of 186 when the two sides met in the fourth Test of the Border-Gavaskar trophy earlier this year.

Ponting said to the ICC that both men would be key to India’s chances in the match and the Australian team would be planning to get them early.

“The Australian team will be talking about Virat, no doubt about it, and they’ll be talking about Pujara. They’re the two,” Ponting said on The ICC Review.

“Pujara has been a thorn in their side a lot in the past, and in Australia, and this wicket will potentially be a lot more like an Australian pitch. They know that they’ll have to get him early.”

Kohli comes into the match at the Oval on the back of a fantastic IPL season, where he scored 639 runs for RCB in 14 matches. Ponting said that the Aussies would know the Indian star is back in form.

The former Australian captain also revealed that Kohli told him he is almost back to his best.

“They also know that Virat over the last few weeks is probably just about back to his absolute best, albeit in T20 cricket.”

“He told me that the feeling he’s getting right now is that he’s almost back to his best, and that’s an ominous warning for the Australians going into a one-off game,” said Ponting.
