Healy says UPW should’ve supported McGrath with the bat (PTI)
By India Today Web Desk: UP Warriorz captain Alyssa Healy said that her team needed to support Tahlia McGarth with the bat against Delhi Capitals. McGrath scored an unbeaten 90 but her knock went in vain as DC beat UPW by 42 runs at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai.
Speaking after the match, Healy said the team would have killed to have Australia all-rounder Grace Harris on the pitch during the last few overs against DC. Harris scored a brilliant half-century against Gujarat Giants in UPW’s first WPL match, guiding them to a 3-wicket win. However, Harris was dropped for UPW’s game against DC.
“That is T20 cricket. We went for 65 runs in the last 5 overs and lost 3 wickets in the powerplay. It was going to go one of two ways, we would have killed for Grace there at the end but Ismail did well,” said Healy.
She went on to say that UP Warriorz gave away a bit too many runs on the field and needed to support McGrath with the bat.
“We gave away a few too many in the field. TM (Tahlia McGrath) was alone with the bat and we needed to give her support,” Healy added.
Finally, she said that the team knew they had to come out all guns blazing, while insisting that she got out playing a loose shot against Australia teammate Jess Jonassen. Delhi Capitals put up 211/4 on the board for UPW to chase, who could only make 169/5 in 20 overs, losing the match by 42 runs.
“We knew we had to come out firing, I was too loose against Jonno (Jonassen) in that over. The positive is we are doing a lot of good things but in a tournament like this it is hard to fix the small things. Fingers crossed we can correct those in a few days time,” said Healy.
After losing against Delhi Capitas, UP Warriorz will now get set to face Smriti Mandhana’s Royal Challengers Bangalore on March 10.
