When it comes to the World Cup, you can’t have family commitments: Sunil Gavaskar wants Rohit Sharma to play all ODIs in 2023

Sunil Gavaskar was of the opinion that unless in cases of emergency, family commitments should take a backseat, especially in the year of the 50-over World Cup.

By India Today Sports Desk: Legendary batter Sunil Gavaskar said that “family commitments” at the time of the World Cup, except in cases of emergency, should take a backseat. Gavaskar made the comments after Indian skipper Rohit Sharma missed the first ODI against Australia that was played at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

When the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) named the squad for the last two Test matches, it also said that Rohit would miss the Wankhede ODI. Hardik Pandya captained the Men in Blue in his absence.

“I think he needs to play every game. You can’t have a captain who is there for one match and not there for the rest. It is so important. It can happen to any other player but I think… I know it was a family commitment, so he had to be there. That’s understandable,” Gavaskar told Star Sports.

“When it comes to the World Cup, you can’t have a family commitment; it’s as simple as that. Maybe before that, finish everything that you have… unless it’s an emergency. Emergency is something completely different,” he stated.

“You need continuity in leadership. There’s a feeling that you have got everybody with you, otherwise there are two leaders. Then there are two leaders that the team is looking at,” Gavaskar added.

Rohit helped India win the Test series against the Aussies 2-1, but couldn’t save them from a 1-2 defeat in the ODI series. India started the series with a five-wicket win in Mumbai, but slumped to a 10-wicket defeat in Vizag.

Thereafter, the hosts lost the final ODI by 21 runs at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai to concede the series.
