By India Today Sports Desk: It was a special knock from a special batter as Virat Kohli notched up his 7th IPL hundred, going past Chris Gayle’s record for the most 3-figure scores in the tournament. And the hundred came in a must-win match for RCB against defending champions Gujarat Titans in IPL 2023’s last league game on Sunday.

Virat Kohli put on a show in front of the home crowd at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium as the former captain hit 101 not out in just 61 balls, smashing 13 boundaries and a six.

IPL 2023: Points Table

Virat Kohli became only the 3rd batter in the history of IPL to hit back-to-back hundreds in the IPL after Shikhar Dhawan (2020) and Jos Buttler (2022). The former India captain had hit a hundred in a winning cause against SunRisers Hyderabad in Hyderabad on May 19 to keep the team’s playoffs hopes alive and he carried on the golden touch in Bengaluru.

It was Virat Kohli’s 4th IPL hundred at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium as he came up with muted celebrations, knowing there was work left to be done for the franchise to seal the final playoffs spot. RCB were 5th with 14 points, 2 behind Mumbai Indians who finished their campaign with a crucial win over SunRisers Hyderabad earlier in the day.

While Virat Kohli’s hundred in Hyderabad was a show of power-hitting as he stitched a 172-run stand with Faf du Plessis, it was a composed knock in Bengaluru as the star batter anchored the innings even as wickets were falling around him.

Former cricketers and fans on social media paid rich tribute to Virat Kohli, who said he felt he was back to his best in the shortest format of the game.

Virat Kohli started slow, managing just 8 runs from 10 balls after Gujarat Titans won the toss and opted to bowl after rain delayed the start of play in Bengaluru.

However, Kohli switched gears after hitting Yash Dayal for 3 boundaries. Kohli did not look back from there on as he took on the role of leading the charge when RCB lost 3 wickets, including that of Faf du Plessis and Glenn Maxwell in quick succession after the powerplay.

Kohli only pushed the gears higher as the RCB innings headed toward the close, helping the home side post 197 in 20 overs.

Virat Kohli also took his tally past 600 in an IPL season for the 3rd time in his career. It was also the first time since 2016 Kohli has scored multiple centuries in an IPL season.
