Time to address Yuzvendra Chahal as legend: Sanju Samson lauds RR leg-spinner after IPL history

By India Today Sports Desk: Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson heaped rich praise on Yuzvendra Chahal, saying it’s time for the world to call him a legend. Samson’s comments came after Chahal broke Dwayne Bravo’s record for the most wickets in the history of IPL 2023, playing a key role in their dominant win over Kolkata Knight Riders in a crunch IPL 2023 match at the Eden Gardens on Thursday, May 11.

Yuzvendra Chahal took his IPL wickets tally to 187, 4 more than Dwayne Bravo after his sensational 4-wicket haul that saw Kolkata Knight Riders restricted to 149 for 8 in 20 overs. Chahal also took over the Purple Cap, going past Mohammed Shami with 21 wickets in 12 matches in IPL 2023.

Chahal has been in sensational form for Rajasthan Royals ever since he moved to the former champions in 2022 from Royal Challengers Bangalore. After winning the Purple Cap with 27 wickets in 2022, Chahal is topping the leaderboard with at least 2 matches to go for the Royals.

Lauding Yuzvendra Chahal’s contribution to the team, Sanju Samson said he doesn’t have to discuss plans with the leg-spinner, adding that the Haryana star is an asset to the Royals.

IPL 2023: Points Table

“I think it is time to give him the tag of legend. We are grateful to have him in the franchise. Never have to speak to him, give him the ball and he knows what to do. He bowls at the death as well, very pleasing for me as a captain,” Samson said after RR’s 9-wicket win on Thursday.

Chahal’s heroics with the ball was overshadowed by 21-year-old Yashasvi Jaiswal, who brought up the fastest half-century in the history of IPL before he finished with 98 not out from just 47 balls.

Samson himself chipped in with 48 not out but he was in awe of young Yashasvi’s sensational knock that lit up the Eden Gardens.

“We always expect this from Yashasvi Jaiswal. I didn’t have to do anything today. Just put bat on ball and watch him play. We are used to it now, even the bowlers know how he goes in the powerplay. He enjoys batting in the powerplay,” Samson said, lauding Yashasvi.

Rajasthan Royals moved to the 3rd spot from No. 5 in the IPL 2023 points table after their 9-wicket win on Thursday.

The Royals have boosted their chances of reaching the playoffs amid a crowded mid-table battle for the top 4 spot.

The 2008 champions, who lost 5 out of their last 6 games before Thursday, will take on RCB on May 14 before facing Punjab Kings on May 19 and Samson said the Royals can’t afford to let their guards drop.

“We have two more quarter finals to play, the pressure in never off in the IPL. Each game, each over is important,” he added.
