By India Today Sports Desk: Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has said that the club should look to move on David de Gea, despite the Spaniard shotstopper winning the Premier League Golden Glove for the 2022/23 campaign.
De Gea was able to keep 17 clean sheets this season in the league as United finished third in the Premier League table after their 2-1 win over Fulham on Sunday.
However, the 32-year-old has received criticism this season for his mistakes which have cost the Red Devils. The Spaniard had a howler against Sevilla in the Europa League which led to Manchester United’s exit from the competition after a 3-0 loss.
De Gea would then struggle to prevent a tame shot from Said Benarhama from going into the net as United suffered a 1-0 loss to West Ham a few weeks back.
Speaking after the win over Fulham, as quoted by Manchester Evening News, Keane said that he would ask the club to move on De Gea quickly as he feels the Spaniard will not get them back to winning trophies.
“United had to improve from last year, they were so bad defensively,” Keane told Sky Sports. “They’re all patting him on the back. I’d move him on quickly, De Gea. He’s not going to get United back lifting trophies, absolutely not. United were bound to improve from last year so everyone patting him on the head is ridiculous. It’s his job.”
When asked if he’d keep him as a potential back-up, Keane added that the 32-year-old wouldn’t want to stay on as the second option at the club.
“You wouldn’t keep him as a No.2, would you? He wouldn’t want to be No.2. He’s been No.1 at United for 10 years. He wouldn’t stay on.”
“I think he’s made far too many mistakes over the years. He was trying to leave the club a couple of years ago, he was trying to go to Real Madrid!” said Keane.
