By India Today Web Desk: Former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar has showered praise on Mumbai batter Prithvi Shaw, saying that he is thrilled that his record was broken by a batter he adores. Shaw smashed 379 runs against Assam, going past Manjerekar’s record to become the highest run-getter in a single innings for Mumbai.

Shaw’s knock of 379 runs is the second-highest score by a batter in the Ranji Trophy, only behind BB Nimbalkar, who remained unbeaten on 443 runs for Maharashtra against Saurashtra. Manjrekar used to hold the record for the highest individual score in a single Ranji Trophy innings, scoring 377 runs against Hyderabad.

The former cricketer took to social media to congratulate Shaw for his record-breaking knock against Assam.

“Thrilled that my record of 377 was beaten by a batter I adore! Well done Prithvi!,” posted Manjrekar on his Twitter account.

Earlier, former India opener Gautam Gambhir has urged the coaches and selectors to help get players like Shaw on the right track.

“Someone like Prithvi Shaw, the kind of start he had to his international career and the kind of talent he has, you back a player on talent. Yes, you have to look at the upbringing as well – where he comes from and the challenges he’s had as well. It makes even more sense for the management and the selectors to keep him around the mix, and help him get on the right track,” said Gambhir.

The 23-year-old broke several records on his way and surpassed the individual scores achieved by some of the legends of the game on his way to 379.

The opener was finally dismissed by Riyan Parag who was able to trap him in front of the stumps. Shaw scored 379 off just 383 deliveries and his innings had 49 boundaries and four massive sixes.
