Steve Smith, who was unbeaten on 95 overnight, hit two boundaries off Siraj in the first over of the second day. This was Smith’s 31st Test hundred and ninth against India. Smith broke Ricky Ponting’s record for most hundreds by an Australian against India and equaled Joe Root’s record for most Test hundreds by any batter against India.

India-Australia Tests have been played in good spirits in recent times. In fact, during the 2023 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Allan Border wasn’t impressed with Steve Smith for showing his appreciation for India bowlers who beat him at the crease.

On Thursday at The Oval, Mohammed Siraj bowled two poor balls and then he was stopped in his run-up as Steve Smith pulled out after being distracted by a Spydercam. Not happy with this, Siraj threw the ball past Smith to wicketkeeper KS Bharat.

Steve Smith was perplexed and Ravi Shastri, who was on air, at the time for STAR Sports, said the Australian had every right to pull out of strike if he was distracted. Fortunately, the incident did not boil over and the game moved on from there.

Steve Smith was involved in a 285-run partnership with Travis Head, who scored his first Test hundred outside Australia. Head scored a rapid 163 before he was dismissed by Siraj. Mohammed Shami also struck early on the second day, dismissing the dangerous Cameron Green while Shardul Thakur got the big wicket of Steve Smith. India made a strong comeback thanks to their pacers in the first session and a superb direct throw from substitute fielder Axar Patel who ran Mitchell Starc out.

Mohammed Siraj picked another wicket after lunch when he dismissed Nathan Lyon while Ravindra Jadeja picked his first wicket of the match after seeing off Alex Carey.
