French Open 2023: I love to play on clay, says Alexander Zverev after reaching the semi-finals

By India Today Sports Desk: 22nd seed Alexander Zverev said he loves to play on clay following his win over Argentina’s Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the quarter-finals of the 2023 French Open.

Speaking after the match, Zverev said he loves to play on clay and is happy to reach the semi-finals of Roland Garros. Zverev defeated Etcheverry 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in a match that lasted three hours and 22 minutes.

“The conditions during the day are a lot better for me. The ball is a lot faster and bounces higher. I love to play on clay and day conditions are better. I am in the semi-finals at Roland Garros and I am happy about that,” said Zverev.

He went on to say that the fourth set was incredible from both the players, but insisted that he deserved to win the quarter-final clash. This will be Zverev’s third consecutive semi-final at the French Open and the 11th semi-final in Grand Slams.

“The 5-4 game [in the fourth set] was incredible from both of us. He was hitting the ball extremely hard and I was hitting the ball extremely hard. At the end of the day I think I deserved to win,” Zverev added.

The German said Etcheverry reminds him a lot of former tennis star Juan Martin del Potro because of the way he hits his forehand shots. Zverev now has a 28-7 record in the French Open.

“He is playing incredible tennis. He reminds me a lot of [Juan Martin] del Potro. The way he plays and the way he hits his forehand. He is an incredible player. I think if he continues to play like this he will be in the quarter-finals here a lot more and he can be Top 10 and win big tournaments. He proved it this week and I wish him nothing but the best,” said Zverev.

Zverev will now face the winner between Casper Ruud and Holger Rune in the semi-finals of 2023 French Open.
