By India Today Web Desk: Mauricio Pochettino has backed Lionel Messi to take Argentina all the way at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Messi might be in the twilight of his international career and playing his final World Cup but the former Paris Saint-Germain manager believes Messi is capable of doing magic at the biggest showpiece event.

Messi’s Argentina avoided an early exit as they came back from behind after their shock defeat to Saudi Arabia. Lionel Scaloni’s men defeated Poland and Mexico 2-0 to make it to the Round of 16 where they will face Australia on Sunday.

Pochettino, who worked with Messi last season at PSG, said the Argentina captain is still the best player in the world.

“Messi will always be decisive. He’s the best player in the world,” Pochettino told Ole, as quoted by Reuters.

“Messi has the role today that can give Argentina the World Cup. He’s the clear leader of this team and everyone understands that he’s the leader, all the energy is focused on that.”

Pochettino had the opportunity to manage Neymar and Kylian Mbappe who are also running the show at the FIFA World Cup. However, the Argentina tactician said Messi is a cut above the rest, adding that he has rarely seen him make a technical mistake even in training.

“They’re players who will always surprise you… You can understand the dimension of each one,” Pochettino said. “In football terms, I highlight Messi’s simplicity. The ability to make everything simple.

“It’s very difficult to remember a training session in a year in which I’ve seen him make a technical mistake.”.
