By India Today Web Desk: India captain Rohit Sharma has said that it is beyond his understanding why there has been so much talk about the Nagpur pitch and no comments on the skills of the players after the team’s win on Saturday.

India thrashed Australia by an innings and 132 runs in the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to take a 1-0 lead in the series. Before the game, a lot was said about the pitch in Nagpur, with the Australian media claiming the track was doctored to assist the Indian bowlers.

Sharma appeared to be on a different level to the others in Nagpur as he scored a fine hundred and became the first Indian to score a ton in all three formats of the game as a captain.

Speaking to Ravichandran Ashwin, for BCCI’s website, the India captain said that everyone was batting on the same pitch. He went on to reveal that the talk in the Indian dressing room wasn’t about the track in Nagpur, but about each player’s ability.

Sharma said it is beyond his understanding as to why there was so much chatter about the Nagpur pitch and said it was sad to see not enough talk about the skills of the players.

The India captain said the success mantra in pitches like the one in Nagpur is to apply yourself and shift the momentum towards you.

It’s the same pitch. The talk that we had in the change room was not about the pitch. It is about your ability. What you can go out there and do on that pitch. It’s beyond my understanding why there is so much talk about the pitch. Sad to see there’s not enough talk about the skills of the bowler, of the batter. People are not talking about that, which is extremely sad. But that’s how it is. It doesn’t really bother us. What we got to do is come out and play good cricket and that’s what we have been doing for few years on pitches like this. Sometimes, I feel playing in overseas is better than playing in these conditions. You got to apply yourself. When the pitches are like that, you got to try and apply and see how you can shift the momentum towards you and shift the pressure back on the opposition.
