himpuBhutan, is a landlocked country in South Asia located at the eastern end of the Himalayas. It is also called the land the ‘Land of the Thunder Dragon’.

Places of interest

The Folk Heritage museum: The Museum gives us the information about The Bhutanese Folk people. As photography was not allowed I wasn’t able to click photographs. But there are some pictures of the outside.

Institute of Zorigchusum: Where students were learning art, sculpture, pottery, wood carving and embroidery. We first went in the wood-carving class where students were learning a design from their master. They used different types of chisels for fine, thick, cut-offs etc. They were focused on their work and did really well.

Painting and arts: After the wood-carving class we saw the students who were learning arts and paintings. They had an exam, so we hastily saw and left. But I managed to click pictures of their wonderful works. Really, if you are going crazy with these amazing paintings, you’ll go crazier to see it in front of you yourself! Its beautiful!

Sculpture: When we went to the Sculpture class, we were speechless. The models were spectacular! Buddhas, humans and dragons, looked so realistic!

National Library of Bhutan: The Library has many books, including, Bhutanese, Buddhism, English etc. In fact, Bhutan also has the world’s largest book, which is 7 foot by 5 foot big. Unfortunately, we are not allowed to see it.

Takin Zoo: Takin is the national animal of Bhutan. They are mostly found in bamboo covered forested valleys. It resembles the mixture of lamb and cow. It grazes on leaves, grass, bamboo shoots and flowers.

Bhutan Broadcasting Service (BBS): It is the Radio station of Bhutan. From where we get a bird’s eye-view of Thimphu. We can also see the Buddha Point at a far distance from BBS. We could see a miniature version from the top! Houses, cars, trees everything is so tiny! It gives you a wonderful feeling to stand between the spiritual flags, all colourful and bright.

Buddha Dordenma Statue: The enormous, magnificent statue of the Dordenma Statue sits in the heart of Thimphu. Made out of bronze and gilded in gold, it will house over one hundred thousand small Buddha statues. It is not completed yet, but the atmosphere around is very mesmerising. The lovely breeze flowing, whispering to us in a soft tone, The Thimphu city around, beautifully covered with a blanket of green.

Where to stay

We reached Thimphu at night. We stayed at The Wangchuk Resort. It was a good hotel, but at the top, so it takes time to reach there. But it’s beautiful. There are lovely paintings and antiques around, and the view is spectacular.
