Stop illegal buffalo fights, Gogoi urged

GOOIGuwahati, Jan 09: A rights group Fri urged Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi to prevent illegal  buffalo and bulbul (songbirds) fights before the Bihu pageant within the state.

“The illegal  observe of animal fighting, be it with buffaloes or bulbuls, involves huge cruelty that ultimately leads to distress, injury and painful death of most of those animals,” wrote N.G. Jayasimha, director of Humane Society International/India, in a letter to Gogoi.

Such fights are unionised throughout the Bihu pageant command between Jan fourteen and sixteen in numerous districts of Assam like Sivsagar, Nagaon, Morigaon and Kamrup.

Jayasimha, conjointly a member of the Animal Welfare Board of India, aforesaid many buffaloes are forced to participate in fights for an award of Rs.10,000 or additional.

Buffalo fights happen in Ahatguri, a village in Morigaon district, in tournaments since 1972 as suggests that of diversion wherever the buffaloes bleed extravagantly and obtain severely dislocated, he said.

According to the letter, bulbuls (songbirds), protected below the wildlife Protection Act of 1972, are captured from the wild by villagers who then train them by intoxicating their food with marijuana and starve the bird an evening before the fight.

In may 2014, the Supreme Court passed an order prohibiting all animal races and fights, leading the Animal Welfare Board and the government to stop infliction of inessential pain and suffering to animals.
