Odisha MP launches indefinite fast over missing villagers

p k majhiBhubaneswar, Feb 14: Congress MP from Odisha Friday launched an indefinite fast here exacting info from the authorities on 5 people missing in his constituency.

Majhi, who represents the Nabarangpur constituency within the Lok Sabha, said 5 people went missing in police custody over the previous few years. Four of them were in remission on charges of being Maoist supporters.

“Police didn’t turn out them within the court nor they handed over their bodies to the families if they were dead,” Majhi told.

Citing one in all the incidents, Majhi said police had removed Trinath Samrath from his village in April last year in reference to a theft case. the person didn’t come home. Police didn’t turn out him in a court, he said.

However, Superintendent of Police Akhileswar Singh refuted the allegations and said only Trinath Samrath has been missing.

Police have filed a missing case and efforts are on to find him, Singh told.

He said the opposite four people were dead and a court has already given clean account to police within the matter.

Pradeep Kumar Majhi launched a mass protest here Wednesday with a 48-hour notice to the govt. to reply.

“Since the govt. didn’t reply, I had no other means but to launch this hunger strike,” he told reporters.

He said the families of all the 5 missing people were also sitting with him at the protest site.
